Xenophobic Attacks: President Zuma called president Jonathan

 
Today, the South African President, Jacob Zuma called President Jonathan to express his sadness over the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa. He appealed to President Jonathan not to allow the incident affect the bilateral relationship between the two countries. Read the report below;

“The two Presidents reaffirmed the warm and cordial relations between South Africa and Nigeria and pledged that the two countries will continue to work together for the good of their peoples and the continent as a whole. President Jonathan expressed his support for the efforts of South Africa to arrest the attacks on foreign nationals and to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, including foreign nationals and those from the African continent in particular, who bore the brunt of the attacks earlier this month (April).”

Bus conductor stabs passenger with broken bottle in Badagry over fares

A bus conductor, Ademola Segun, who allegedly stabbed a passenger with a broken bottle on his belly, was on Wednesday brought before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State. The accused, 18, whose address is unknown, is facing a charge of assault.

The prosecution said the accused allegedly stabbed a passenger on the bus, Abraham Shedrack, with a broken bottle following an argument over fares. Insp. Innocent Uko told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 6 at Ajido Bus Stop in Badagry.

14 French soldiers implicated in C. Africa child rape probe

             
Fourteen French soldiers are implicated in a probe into the alleged rape of children in the Central African Republic, a judicial source said Thursday, in what could be a potentially devastating scandal for the army.

The source, who wished to remain anonymous, said that “very few” of these soldiers had actually been identified in an ongoing investigation based on the statements of six children aged nine to 13.

AFP report claimes that the Nigerian Army says it has rescued about 160 more hostages from Sambisa Forest.

"We are still trying to compute the actual number of those rescued. But tentatively there are about 60 women of various ages and around 100 children," Army spokesman Sani Usman told AFP.

Hefurther stated that one woman was killed in the fighting and eight other rescued hostages were injured. A soldier was also killed and four others wounded.

The Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka sacks Director of FAAN over appointment irregularities


The Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka has sacked the Director of finance of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr Tochukwu Bede Uchendu, over allegations of irregularities associated with his appointment into office as well as granting unapproved waivers worth N1 billion. Mr Uchendu's sack was effected following a petition by the Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) and the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) dated March 23rd and addressed to the office of the Head of Service.

The duo and their firms: Gava Corporation Limited; Romrig Nigeria Limited; PML Securities Company Limited and PML Nigeria Limited, were dragged before the court by EFCC over an 81-count charge of alleged money laundering, misappropriation of funds and abuse of office.

Rescued girls from Sambisa forest to undergo HIV & other tests - Military

                           
In other to ascertain the state of health of each other rescued girls from Sambisa forest, the Nigerian military has moved the 293 females they rescued two days ago from Sambisa Forest to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital where they are to undergo series of test including HIV and pregnancy test. According toreport by Punch, 7 of the girls rescued had gunshot wounds and are being treated at the hospital. The 200 girls rescued are of between ages 13 and 18 years.

No court can make anyone PMAN President – TEE MAC

Renowned  flutist and former President of Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, PMAN, Tee Mac, has said it was wrong for anyone to parade himself as President of the body based on a court decision, as no court anywhere can elect one for PMAN.

He spoke at the inauguration of an electoral committee for PMAN at the association’s headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos.

Tee Mac said: “When I joined the Peace Initiative Committee, which later became the Caretaker Committee, we agreed to drop all the court cases. But some people used one of the cases as springboard to a fractional PMAN presidency.

Nigerian govt. demands return of corpses of 4 Nigerians executed in Indonesia

                  
The Federal Government of Nigeria has demanded for the return of the corpses of 4 Nigerians executed in Indonesia following drug related offences on April 28th.

Read the statement released by the Public Communications Division of Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, were federal govt. condemned their execution and condoled with their families;

“The Federal Government of Nigeria has received with deep disappointment, news of the execution of four Nigerians, Messrs Martin Anderson, Okwudili Oyatanze, Jaminu Abashin and Sylvester Obiekwe by the government of Indonesia for drug-related offences. President-elect, Gen. Buhari in a statement released yesterday and signed by the Director of Publicity for the Buhari Campaign Organisation, Garba Shehu, said this is the era of change and that he along with his staff will ensure they do not make the same mistakes the outgoing government made.

"The time for change has come and we must avoid making the same mistakes that the outgoing government made" the statement read in part. The statement also stated that Gen Buhari instructed his staff to"steer clear of all dealings with the media, and leave all media affairs to his official media team. "I would like everyone to henceforth stay within his/her defined area of responsibility,” Buhari said.

The rescued 293 girls are not Chibok girls - Borno govt

                      
Borno state govt says profiling of the 293 females rescued from Sambisa forest yesterday April 28th shows that they are from Damboa local government and not from Chibok as was highly speculated.

Speaking with newsmen in Maiduguri today April 29th, the state Commissioner for Information, Dr. Mohammed Bulama, say the rescued females are from Bumsiri village in Damboa Local government area and were all kidnapped from the village by the sect members.

The girls are not the missing chibok school girls.

The presidential transition committee set up by the federal government has accused Gen. Buhari's transition committee of acting like a parallel government, trying to stampede the Jonathan administration out of office.

Addressing state House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting today April 29th, the Minister of National Planning, Abubakar Suleiman who is also a member of the Jonathan Transition Committee, accused General Buhari's transition committee members of making impossible demands from the government. Although he did not name those demands, he however warned that the president’s magnanimity should not be construed as cowardice.

No more dodging a bullet, as U.S. develops self-guided ammunition


You know the phrase "dodging a bullet"? Forget about it. Probably not going to happen anymore. The U.S. military said this week it has made great progress in its effort to develop a self-steering bullet.

In February, the "smart bullets" -- .50-caliber projectiles equipped with optical sensors -- passed their most successful round of live-fire tests to date, according to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA. In the tests, an experienced marksman "repeatedly hit moving and evading targets," a DARPA statement said.

Jonathan, Sambo, others to get N3.24bn severance pay

President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice-president Namadi Sambo, non-returning federal lawmakers, ministers and   presidential aides will collect N3.24bn as severance allowances, investigation by The PUNCH has shown.

The severance allowances   are contained in the Remuneration Package   put together by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission. According to the package, Jonathan, who will hand over to the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, on May 29, is entitled to 300 per cent of his annual basic salary.

The President’s annual basic salary is put at N3, 514,705 and therefore his severance allowance will be N10, 544,115 after May 29. The severance allowance is without prejudice to his other constitutional entitlements as a former head of government.

The national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has denied apologising to the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State, Chief Bode George.

George had said during an interview with the Sunday PUNCH that Tinubu was responsible for his imprisonment but had apologised to him at the burial of the Deputy President General of Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Abdul-Azeez Arisekola-Alao, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, last year.

However, Tinubu in a statement by his media adviser, Mr. Sunday Dare, said he never apologised to George since he had nothing to do with George’s incarceration.

Prostitution in Libya: I gave out my cousin for N10,000—Suspect

The principal suspect in the kidnap of a teenager, who was taken to Libya for prostitution last year, Kelvin Okorie, said yesterday that he gave his cousin out after taking N10,000 from the suspected traffickers.

The victim, 15-year-old Precious Ugochi Okoro, a boarder at Ikenne Community High School, Ikenne, Ogun State, was reportedly attacked by cultists, while on her way to school in May 2014.

Thereafter, she was reportedly kidnapped and taken to Libya, where she said she was forced into prostitution before her release by the Police in Lagos.

Precious Nwaigwe, the 15-year-old schoolgirl, who was kidnapped in the Ajah area of Lagos State about a year ago, has said she was made to work for $6,000 the Libyan pimp paid to buy her. She added that after paying the money, she was again used as collateral for a 500 Libyan dinars (N50,000) loan.

She also stated that her abductors conducted pregnancy tests on her three different times, which were negative. The schoolgirl, who was released on Friday, spoke to PUNCH Metro on Monday in Ikeja, Lagos.
She said she saw more than 1,000 Nigerian girls, who were also forced to work for the money paid by the pimps to the human traffickers.

 The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as unacceptable the Monday’s directive by the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to bar a television house, the AIT, from covering his activities, saying the suppression of the media under any guise portends danger for the nation’s democracy.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh in a statement on Tuesday said that after carefully studying the defence posited by General Buhari’s campaign spokesperson as well as the smokescreen statement by the APC to cover and mitigate his anti-media posture, the PDP and indeed all lovers of democracy are persuaded that the action was not only unjustifiable, but also unconstitutional and completely against the spirit of liberty and the rule of law in a democracy.

First i must state that it seems this Abacha loot doesn't run dry, as every new government is approached by the western powers who often promise to help in repatriating the funds back to Nigeria govt. So many questions comes to mind; first, why only Abacha? Not that i am a fan of the late dictator but it seems the ill wealth of the late dictator is the only one the western powers and so called friendly govt's to Nigeria can find.  How about those that are still living but who have sucked this nation dry...can't they help us get the money too? Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Hans Rodulf Hodel, Monday, revealed that a new loot of $370 million traced to the former Military Head of State, late Sani Abacha has been discovered in Luxembourg, saying that his country would be eager to help Nigeria reclaim the money if the authorities make a formal request for it.

4 dead as radio station bombed in Kogi state

Four persons were killed, while several others sustained serious injuries following a bomb attack on a community radio station, TAO FM in Okene, Kogi State, yesterday night. A source in the town said that the bomb exploded at the radio station, operating on 101.5 frequency, at about 8pm.

Unconfirmed reports said that those killed were mainly security personnel, who might have confronted the assailants as they were trying to deliver their deadly goods.

The reason for bombing the radio station located at the centre of Okene town, which is the headquarters of Kogi Central Senatorial District, was not known as no group had claimed responsibility for the attack.
